Jeff Rasley’s talk and power point will describe the increasing polarization in US politics and culture and why it is harmful to democratic institutions and values. The influence of social media on the trend of increasing incivility and “siloing” will be discussed. What can be done to try to reverse these trends will be explained in light of an experiment Rasley conducted in Facebook and research conducted for his book, Polarized! The Case for Civility in the Time of Trump. A question/answer discussion period will follow the presentation.

About the Speaker: Jeff Rasley is a retired lawyer, has taught classes at Butler and Marian Universities on culturally sensitive development for agrarian communities and memoir writing at the Indiana Writing Center. He is a Himalayan trek leader, author of 10 books and over 70 magazine/journal articles. He is a board member of 6 nonprofit organizations, including the Indianapolis Peace & Justice Center.
